What does transposing entail?

‘Transpose’ is another word for ‘convert’. In data science, this term is used to describe the transposition of rows and columns, where vertical data is placed horizontally and horizontal data is placed vertically.

What is the use of transposing data with our tool?

Our transposition tool is mainly suitable for transposing single rows or columns. Suppose you are using a tool which requires you to enter your data vertically, but you have been working with rows yourself, then it can be quite a task to manually rearrange all those data. The same applies the other way around: if you have been working with columns, but suddenly have to use semicolons as separators, this will take some time. Especially if you are dealing with thousands of data entries, you certainly do not want to have to transpose them yourself.

How can you transpose data with our tool?

Whether you originally entered your data horizontally or vertically, to transpose them you can simply copy and paste them into our tool. For columns, the entries will automatically appear below each other. When working with rows, you will have to separate the individual data yourself (depending on the original formatting).

Next, choose the separator to be used for transposition. If you want to convert a vertical list into a horizontal list, our tool will put the separator between each separate data item. If you want to transpose a horizontal list to a vertical one, choose the separator you used yourself when originally compiling your data.

For separators, you can choose Tab, semicolon, comma, space, or comma and space. You can also define your own separator. To do so, enter your desired symbol nextt to “Other”, for example a semicolon and a space. Do not write out the symbols word for word, unlike what we have done for the sake of clarity.

Now you can click on ‘Transpose’, and your data will be converted to the correct format. A horizontal list can now easily be pasted as a column in Excel, for example. If you have chosen Tab as your separator, you could also copy a vertical list directly into a spreadsheet, one entry per cell.

Transposing a complete table?

Our tool is mainly suitable for transposing a single row or column, not for complete tables. Would you like to know how to transpose a complete table? This is easy in Excel! Microsoft has an official article about transposing columns, rows and tables, which might be of more use to you in that case.
